The upcoming fantasy/adventure movie Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is directed by Chris Columbus, famous for directing the first two of the Harry Potter and Home Alone series. It will be shown in theaters on February 12, 2010. It is an adaptation of the first novel Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, which is written by Rick Riordan. The series is on Greek mythology. The story chronicles the life of a troubled teenage boy, Percy Jackson, who discovers that he is a demigod in the 21st century. His mother is a mortal named Sally Jackson, and his father is Posedion, the god of the sea. Throughout the series, he goes on several adventures to save his family and friends, and the gods of Olympus, while discovering his heritage, powers, and himself.
On the first adaptation, The Lightning Thief, he learns for the first time about his true identity about being a son of one of the Big Three (Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades). Zeus’ lightning bolt gets stolen and he is the prime suspect. He goes on a journey with his new-found friends to save his mother and to get back the stolen lightning bolt, and eventually stop a war between the gods.

Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman)- He is the main character and the protagonist in the story. He is a demigod, son of a mortal Sally Jackson, and the god of the sea Poseidon. He has ADHD and dyslexia. Because he is a son of Poseidon, he has the ability to control and manipulate water. He has hydrokinetic powers, which means that he is able to move water with the use of his mind. He can breathe underwater. He can also create small hurricanes around himself. He was given an enchanted sword called Anaklusmos (Riptide). It is made of celestial bronze, and turns into a pen when not in use. His primary love interest is Annabeth Chase. He has an empathy link with his best friend Grover, which means that if one dies, the other will probably die.
Grover Underwood (Brandon T. Jackson)- He is the best friend of Percy. he is a satyr, a mythical creature who is half-goat and half-human. Although he is already 32 years old, he is the equivalent of a 16-year old man because satyrs mature half as fast as humans. He can understand and talk to animals. He can also summon nature spirits and talk to them.
Annabeth Chase (Alexandra Daddario)- She is the other best friend of Percy and his growing love interest. she is a demigod, daughter of mortal Frederick Chase and Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and war strategy. She is extremely intelligent, very knowledgeable in architecture, history and Greek mythology, and she is a master strategist. She uses a magical Yankee cap that turns her invisible. She also has weapons which includes double swords and hand crossbows.
Zeus (Sean Bean)- He is the god of the sky and lightning, and the ruler of Olympus. He suspects that it was Percy who stole his lightning bolt.
Poseidon (Kevin McKidd)- He is the god of the sea and earthquakes. He is the father of Percy.
Medusa (Uma Thurman)- She is a gorgon monster who lures people into Aunty Em’s Gnome Emporium and then turns them into statue by just looking at them. She is the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto.
Athena (Melina Kanakeredes)- She is the goddess of wisdom and battle. She is the daughter of Zeus and a Titan, Metis, and she is mother of Annabeth Chase. Because of her rivalry with Poseidon, she doesn’t like that her daughter is the love interest of Percy.
Luke Castellan (Jake Abel)- He is a demigod, son of May Castellan and Hermes, the Greek god of messengers travelers, and thieves. He is the counselor of cabin 11 and a friend of Percy, but later reveals his true self as a high-ranking official of Kronos’ army by attempting to kill Percy.
Silena Beauregard (Chelan Simmons)- She is the daughter of a demigod and Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. She is the lead counselor and head of Cabin Ten.
Sally Jackson (Catherine Keener)- She is the mother of Percy Jackson. She was married to Gabe Ugliano so that monsters will stay away from her son.
Gabe Ugliano (Joe Pantoliano)- He is the abusive stepfather of Percy.
Hades (Steve Coogan)- He is the god of the Underworld. He is the son of the Titan Kronos and Rhea, known as the mother of gods and queen of the Titans. He is the husband of Persephone, goddess of springtime and the Underworld. Percy accused him of stealing Zeus’ lightning bolt.
Hermes (Dylan Neals)- He is the god of messengers, travelers, and thieves. He is the father of Luke Castellan, and a son of Zeus.
Hera (Erica Cerra)- She is the goddess of women and marriage. She is married to Zeus, and the Quuen of the goods. She is the daughter of Kronos.
Demeter (Stefanie von Pfetten)- She is the goddess of the Earth and Harvest. She is a daughter of Rhea and brother of Zeus.
Apollo (Dimitri Lekkos)- He is the god of the sun and archery. He is the twin brother of Artemis, the goddess of the Moon and hunt.
Ares (Ray Winstone)- He is the god of war and son of Zeus and Hera. He dislikes Percy.
Aphrodite (Serinda Swan)- She is the goddess of love and beauty.
Persephone (Rosario Dawson)- She is the goddess of springtime and the Underworld. She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and wife of Hades.
