The science epic film Avatar has already surpassed last Monday the global box record set by Titanic making it the highest grossing movie of all time. In a statement released by 20th Century Fox Studios, it said, “On Monday, January 25, ‘Avatar‘ officially passed ‘Titanic’ to become the highest grossing film in history at the worldwide box office.” It earned $1.859 billion, compared to the 1997 film Titanic with $1.843 billion. It just took Avatar only 39 days while Titanic had to sail for 41 weeks to get there. You can also Download Avatar Full Movie Online Free here on kralix.
The spectacular and groundbreaking 3D blockbuster has raked in a total of $1.862 billion worldwide to date, according to Box Office Mojo. And they did it in just 41 days. The movie grossed $558 million domestically and $1.304 billion in its foreign release.
Box office analyst Jeff Block said to AFP, “It’s official: the king of the world is the king of the world again.”
He also commented, “Like the ship itself, many observers thought ‘Titanic’s’ record box office was unsinkable. Not so. Leave it to the captain of the ship, James Cameron, to sink his own vessel and resurface with a whole new world.”
He also said about Cameron that, “Cameron is that rare combination of movie magician and master tactician. His films aren’t just unspooled, they are unleashed. In the end, they are spectacles and you have to see them to believe. His films don’t follow the worn path; they blaze trails and become part of the cultural zeitgeist of the day.”
Fox said that 3D screenings have accounted for 72 percent or $1.35 billion of the total gross of Avatar. Meaning, the 3D’s domestic share is 80 percent or roughly 56 million admissions in domestic theater and its foreign share is 69 percent. That is about the same tickets that Titanic has sold at this point in its theatrical run. Titanic has been played and played on, and reached 128 million admissions. But today’s average ticket price is $7.46 from $4.69 when Titanic was shown. Although some would say that more people watched Titanic compared to Avatar, it still doesn’t diminish the fact that it broke the record.
In another statement made by Fox, a spokesperson said, “We are deeply gratified that so many millions of people around the globe have embraced Avatar. Its success results from the efforts of literally thousands of people, who, over the course of several years, worked to bring James Cameron’s vision of Pandora to life. The themes of protecting the earth, respecting life, and yearning for a peaceful planet have united moviegoers worldwide. We’re very proud of, and grateful to, James Cameron, his amazing and dedicated team, and all the many people at Fox, who worked so long and so hard to achieve this milestone.”
But come Oscar time, will it beat Titanic’s record with 14 nominations and eleven wins. All About Eve is the only other film which received 14 nominations. Only two other films have the record-high of taking home eleven Oscars; Ben-Hur and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.
