Another gift will be given to movie fanatics and lovers of detective classics come Christmas time. Sherlock Holmes, a movie adaptation of one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous characters.

The film boasts a great cast of overly talented stars. Academy award winner Robert Downey Jr., who made a comeback last year after starring in Tropic Thunder, will bring to life this well-loved detective into the big screen. He lost weight to play this character, because during a chat with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Martin said that Holmes looks “gaunt” and “skinny.” Jude Law will play Holme’s formidable, trusted ally, Dr. John Watson, a surgeon and a war veteran. Law will not portray Watson as a bumbling sidekick that Nigel Bruce popularized in the 1930-40s versions.

Ritchie originally envisioned Russell Crowe to play the part. Rachel McAdams, who rose to fame via smash hits Mean Girls, The Notebook, and her latest was with Eric Bana in The Time Traveller’s Wife, will take on as Irene Adler, a femme fatale from New Jersey, the only woman or human who had outwitted Holmes, earning his grudging respect and had a tempestuous relationship with the detective. In the film version, she is no longer  married to Godfrey Norton. It was Downey who convinced Ritchie to cast McAdams who argued that she would not look to young to be his love interest. Mark Strong will play the main antagonist in the film, Lord Blackwood. Blackwood is a Satan worshipper who has been responsible for the death of at least 5 women as a demonic sacrifice. The character is inspired by the Victorian occultist, Aleister Crowley. Strong was also in Ritchie’s RocknRolla. Kelly Reily will be the love interest of Watson, Mary. Watson  wishes to settle down with Mary, therefore causing a rift with Holmes. Reily received critical acclaim for her work in the films like Pride & Prejudice, and Mrs. Henderson Presents.     Set in 1981, the film follows as Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson on their latest challenge. They will try to stop a a conspiracy that is set to destroy Britain. They will engage in a battle of wits and strength  to put an end to his evil scheme.     Other Watson’s and Irene’s character being slightly changed, modern psychology was also brought in. Holmes is said to be having bipolar disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome, a more high-functioning form of autism.

Holmes will also be showing his flair in the martial arts. Arthur Conan Doyle said that Holmes studied the rare art of baritsu, a fictional martial art he created. And, Holmes is a lot sexier. Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey, Dan Lin, and Steve Clark-Hall produced the film. The screenplay is by  Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham and Simon Kinberg.

The movie will come out in theaters on December 25, 2009 and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros Pictures, a Warner Bros.
